Shopping in Stores this Weekend? 7 Tips for Before You Leave the House

Inspired by Dawn's tips for taking care of yourself when starting holiday shopping Thanksgiving weekend

The holiday shopping season is here! If you're among the millions who are starting their shopping this weekend and are not planning on doing it all from the comfort of your couch, then here are some tips for braving the crowds on Black Friday and Small Business Saturday. We've shared them before but they are worth repeating.

  1. Hydrate - Drink fluids before heading out, and plan to take a refillable water bottle with you so you can stay hydrated while battling the crowds.
  2. Fuel - You'll probably eat well before heading out (turkey and fixings or breakfast at a cafe), but make sure to take snacks as well. A handful of almonds or a banana thrown in your bag should do the trick.
  3. Rx - Organize your medications or vitamins that you need to take ahead of time in a designer pill box like the Style Rx and you won't miss a dose or a deal!
  4. Tote - Spare disposable shopping bags and bring your own reusable totes for all your finds.
  5. Comfort - You'll be on your feet for many hours so choose footwear carefully. This is one time you might want to plan your outfit around your footwear, instead of the other way around!
  6. List - Know who you have to buy for before you head out, and try to list a couple of ideas to focus your search
  7. Budget - Set a budget ahead of time to avoid pain and remorse later. Consider setting a limit for the day or per gift so you don't waste time on items that will blow the budget.
Plan ahead and enjoy a productive weekend of shopping. Happy Shopping and Saving!

How to Leverage the Power of Personal Style

Inspired by Dawn believes in bringing style to life and leveraging style for purpose, much like Stacy London

When you wake up not feeling your best do you reach for your all black "uniform" and sulk off to work or do you reach for an outfit that you know you look good in? The one that forces you to walk a little taller and gives you a little swagger to take on your day? If it's the latter than you realize the positive power that style can have on you. You use style to help you define you and present your best self to others. It's an idea that Inspired by Dawn has espoused since we launched the brand by taking everyday necessities and turning them into stylish accessories!

That's why we were excited to hear one of our style mavens - Stacy London of  What Not to Wear fame - speak recently to a sold-out crowd about finding and defining your own style and using it for good. She emphasized that what we choose to wear out into the world each day speaks volumes about us and our assets or insecurities. So each morning when we open our closet we have a choice - we can choose to express our personality and strength or call attention to our insecurities. We know what we choose - Bringing style to life!

What You Can Do Now to Ease the Post-Time Change Monday Fog

Inspired by Dawn offers tips on facing the Monday after time change refreshed

Mondays are usually hard. Mondays after a time change are often brutal. So with a couple days left before you have to turn the clocks back, here's a few ways you can help ease the pain that you will likely be faced with Monday morning.

  • Start adjusting sleep schedules now - Try going to bed 15 minutes later each evening leading up to Saturday night.
  • Adjust meal times too - Eat at 6:15 tonight vs. your usual 6.
  • Get your vitamin D - Light exposure is critical to keep sleep / wake schedules in balance so make sure you get lots of time outside on Sunday, especially in the morning, and ideally for the next few days post-change.
  • Prepare your room - Make sure bedrooms have adequate window coverings so they are nice and dark, minimizing early morning bright sunlight. A sound machine is always a good option too in order to minimize early morning chirping.
  • Don't engage too early - If you still wake up early give yourself a chance to doze or relax with a book until an appropriate wake-up time.

With a few changes now, hopefully you can face Monday without the fog!

Saturday, October 28 | Clear Out & Safely Dispose of Unused Medication

Inspired by Dawn supports safe disposal of unused medication to help keep our communities safe

Life gets busy and the clutter overwhelms sometimes. You don't intend for it to happen, it just does. If this has happened to your home medicine cabinet then take advantage of Saturday's 14th National Prescription Drug Take Back Day and clear out your unused prescription and over-the-counter medications in a safe way.

From 10am to 2pm on Saturday, October 28th communities across the country are working with the DEA (Drug Enforcement Administration) to set up convenient collection points for unwanted medication. Find your location here.

Both the FDA and EPA agree that these take back days are the safest way to dispose of medications - protecting our food and water supplies, environment and potential for misuse. So take a few minutes and declutter that medicine cabinet and help your community. Win-win!

Going Beyond Breast Cancer Headlines | Staying Focused on Reducing the Risk

Inspired by Dawn offers tips on making sense of breast cancer headlines and support overall health

You've seen them. Sensational headlines that tell you to do or not do (blank) to reduce your breast cancer risk. Insert exercise, consuming alcohol, eating meat, etc., etc. We all want to find the secret sauce, right? You want to know the one thing we should focus on doing, or not doing, to help you avoid breast cancer. You're busy, your brain is full, you want simple. But unfortunately, our bodies are complex and so is this disease. As of yet, there is no one simple, easy fix.

So here are two good resources to help you filter through all the headlines and make sense of the research...

- Today's Alcohol and Breast Cancer Headlines are Wrong: Here's How News Stories Could Have Done Better

How to Find Your Go-To Method for Changing Your Perspective

Inspired by Dawn offers ideas on changing perspective for self-care when the world gets a little, or a lot, chaotic

Self-care. Perspective. We all need these things... sometimes more than others. And with the events of the past month ranging from natural and man-made disasters, many could probably use an extra dose right now. So here's an article from Real Simple where they asked busy people from various backgrounds what they do to take a break and regain their perspective. From playing more, to immersing themselves in nature to enjoying a family meal - they varied widely in their method but had clarity about what worked for them.

Do you know what works for you? If not, take a minute, or five and remember in this crazy, chaotic world what helps you change your perspective and care for yourself. And then, most importantly, make the time to do it.

Why You May Want to be Happy About Your Flu Shot This Fall

Inspired by Dawn highlights how mood may affect the flu shot's effectiveness

You know you're suppose to get your flu shot, right? Of course. Every Fall, preferably before flu season sets in you're suppose to find a doctor, nurse or pharmacist that can administer you a shot at immunity from 5-7 days of fever, chills and malaise during the winter season. Okay, got it.

But did you know how you feel when you get said shot could potentially affect the effectiveness of the immune boost?!? In a study published in Brain, Behavior and Immunity, preliminary research seemed to demonstrate a link between your mood when getting the flu shot and higher flu antibody levels weeks after receiving the shot. Researchers noted, "... the team speculates that there could be both a link between positive moods and healthier lifestyles, and a biological pathway linking the immune system and the brain mechanisms that regulate our moods."

Interesting potential link and one worth trying. So when you're scheduling your flu shot in the next few weeks it might worth planning it around something that truly makes you happy - lunch with a friend, a yoga class, manicure, etc. It can't hurt and it just may help!
